In class this week, we’ve continued to work on throwing and catching with all age groups. The first two days of the week, grades K-2 played “Fitness Dodgeball”, and grades 3-5 played “Backboard Dodgeball”. Both groups worked on fitness, balance and having fun through a variety of different stations on Day 3.
Here are some photos of the action. You’ll also see some photos of students during the Jim Gill assembly.
This week with K-1, we played a game to work on throwing skills called “Pin Ball”. We finished the week with center activities that incorporated hula hoops, balance and aim.
With grades 2-5, we played a game called “Battleship”. This game encourages the students to use teamwork and strategy. This game also encourages proper throwing skills to accomplish the mission of sinking the other teams battleships. Finally, we finished the week with center activities that incorporated hula hoops, a balance (tug-of-war), and fitness.
Attached are photos of some of the action.
Attached is a registration form for GYB (5th grade girls basketball)
This week we’ve continued to work on skills with hula hoops, and played a game called Ring Toss. We also discussed what we were thankful for, and played Thanksgiving Turkey Round-up or Stuff the Turkey. Here are photos taken from this weeks action.
This week we’ve introduced hula hoops at all levels. Students have been asked to perform different movements with a hula hoop.
I’ve attached some interesting facts or records for hula hoops.
An early duration record for the hula hoop was set by 11-year-olds Paulette Robinson, Charles Beard and Patsy Jo Grigby in Jackson, Mississippi lasting 11 hours and 34 minutes (August, 1960). The event was sponsored by radio station WOKJ. 8-year-old Mary Jane Freeze, won a hooping endurance contest on 19 August 1976, by lasting 10 hours and 47 minutes. The current record is held by Bric Sorenson of the United States, who went 90 hours between April 2, and April 6, 1987.
The longest verified record holder is Aaron Hibbs from Columbus, Ohio who broke the record at 74 hours and 54 minutes between October 22, through 25, 2009.
The record for the most hoops twirled simultaneously is 132, set by Paul “Dizzy Hips” Blair on November 11, 2009.The previous record was 107, set by Alesya Gulevich of Belarus, on June 15, 2009.
Records for running while twirling a hula hoop around the waist are:
I find it tough to run a mile in 6:40, and Kris Slomin ran one that fast while hula hooping. Amazing!!!
Here are some pictures of the hula hoop action at Northside.
This week we discussed safety tips for trick or treating, and then played a game called “Trick or Treat”. On day two of the week, K-1 discussed the importance of limiting our intake of sugars from candy, We also discussed the benefits of fruit, and finished the discussion by playing “Shopping for Fruit”.
Grades 2-5 continued working on their soccer skills, and played “4 Goal Soccer”. This is a game that gives students ample opportunity to showcase their skills they’ve learned throughout the unit. It is played with four teams, four goals, and 5 soccer balls…organized ciaos! This is a great game to finish up the soccer unit. Attached are some photos of Mrs. Johnson’s class playing the game.
Attached are photos of costumes and fun we had at Northside this year for Halloween.
This week we’ve worked on locomotor and soccer skills. Attached are some photos of students performing at their best.
